Retail Shop Space, the specialist retail development and leasing company, opened its doors in Cape Town in 2011, and hasn’t looked back since. Having built up exceptionally strong relationships with all of South Africa’s national and major regional retailers, it has developed and leased more than 300,000m² of property in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng since its establishment.
Managed by a highly experienced team, Retail Shop Space’s projects range from small convenience centres to larger lifestyle malls. Its expertise ensures that it ticks all the boxes in its approach – whether identifying exciting retail development opportunities, assessing locations, devising carefully curated tenant mixes, or assessing potential rental income. Both the extension and refurbishment of existing centres – in order to unlock additional value – as well as the development of new centres, fall squarely within its expert focus.
The Retail Shop Space Team
Co-Founders and Directors of Retail Shop Space, Francois Coetzer and Hennie van Wyk, have specialised in retail leasing for 25 years and have been closely involved in the management and development of a number of prime shopping centres. Their depth and breadth of experience underpins an acute understanding of investors’ requirements and of the need for a retail development to be successful and sustainable.

Francois Coetzer
Francois Coetzer is co-founder and Director of Retail Shop Space SA (Pty) Ltd (2011). He obtained a B.Comm degree in 1993 and an Honours degree in 1994 from the University of Stellenbosch.
Francois has been involved in the retail leasing and development of many prominent retail centres countrywide, including Canal Walk, Mountain Mill (Worcester), Margate Checkers, Eden on the Bay (Blouberg Strand), Rosehill Mall (Port Alfred), Village Walk (Durbanville), Swellen Mark (Swellendam) and Tygervalley (Durbanville). To date, he has concluded in excess of 1,000 retail leases.
He was a member of Canal Walk’s Management and Development team for five years, and gained first-hand experience in rent remissions and tenant positioning during this time. His expertise in the field of retail leasing has led to his addressing numerous property conferences over the years.

Hennie van Wyk: CA (SA)
Hennie van Wyk is Co-Founder of Retail Shop Space and has worked in the retail real estate industry since 2007.
He qualified as a CA(SA) after completing his studies at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Cape Town, as well as his articles at PwC (Cape Town and London). He then joined Deutsche Bank, working in both London and New York, before returning to South Africa.
Hennie oversees the centre management, property finance and shareholder reporting for Retail Shop Space developments and investments.

Hennie van Wyk is Co-Founder of Retail Shop Space and has worked in the retail real estate industry since 2007.

Pieter joined Retail Shop Space in June 2014 as a broker for the Western Cape region, and has leased nine Retail Shop Space projects as part of the Development team. He has worked extensively in sales and marketing within the retail industry.

Yolande Burger
Yolande joined the Retail Shop Space team in September 2014. She has a conveyancing background as well as wide-ranging contract experience. Yolande is responsible for drafting Offers and Lease Agreements. She also assists with all legal matters within the Retail Shop Space team.
